GOALS
The volunteer team and concept for this site was invented in reaction to a developer-funded initiative to build 5000+ units of housing on the northwestern end of the island of Alameda. Knowing that we would be vastly outspent and that the local politicians were in favor of the massive development, this project was going to be a tough challenge.
Our plan was to "rise above the spin" and only present information as verified fact. We set up a system where each team member had their area of expertise and an approval process to guarantee that all info posted was accurate and met our criteria. While the site did not hide our premise that the initiative was bad for Alameda, we kept opinion and spin out of the content we presented.
FEATURES
RESULTS
When we first launched the site in June 2009, Alameda's City Staff and four fifths of the City Council (and our mayor) were all proponents of Suncal's development plans. Thanks in part to the information presented at Alameda Point Info, one-by-one the city's mayor, staff, council members, and other organization that were previously pro-Suncal changed their position, often citing aggregate information we had presented on the API site as their reasoning.
Although the proponents spent more than 1.3 million dollars to the anti side's 50k (because this site was donated by Superclean, our costs were about $30 for domain names), the initiative was defeated by 85% to 15%! Since our victory, we have decided to keep the site going and continue tracking future plans for Alameda Point as they develop.
